L’anno scorso i grandi trionfatori erano stati The Farewell di Lulu Wang e Adam Sandler e i fratelli Safdie per Diamanti Grezzi, quest’anno gli Independent Spirit Awards raccontano una stagione in cui i film indie hanno avuto spesso campo libero, dopo i rinvii infiniti del cinema mainstream.
Nomadland, First Cow, Mai raramente a volte sempre, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom e Minari sono i cinque candidati al miglior film dell’anno.
Tra i registi, ben quattro donne, Chloé Zhao, Kelly Reichardt, Eliza Hittman, Emerald Fennell, a cui si aggiunge Lee Isaac Chung.
Mai ramente a volte sempre è il più nominato con ben 7 riconoscimenti, seguono Nomadland, Minari e Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom con 5, quindi First Cow, Promising Young Woman, The Assistant e Sound of Metal con 3.
Il regolamento consente la candidatura ai film con budget inferiore ai 22,5 milioni di dollari.
La cerimonia che di solito si tiene il sabato precedente gli Oscar sulla spiaggia di Santa Monica, è stata invece prevista per giovedì 22 aprile, alle 10 di sera in diretta tv.
