Come da tradizione la prima associazione critica ad annunciare i suoi premi è la National Board of Review.
Quest’anno il vincitore è Manchester By The Sea, il film che segna il ritorno di Kenneth Lonergan dopo molti anni difficili e il disastro del suo ultimo Margareth, passato attraverso una postproduzione infinita, contrasti tra produttori e un’aura di film maledetto.
Il suo nuovo film, interpretato da Casey Affleck si è aggiudicato anche i premi per la migliore sceneggiatura e per il miglior attore, oltre a quello per il miglior giovane esordiente.
Berry Jenkins si è guadagnato invece il premio per la migliore regia per Moonlight, uno degli indie di stagione, più efficaci al box office. Per lo stesso film, Naomi Harris ha vinto il premio della migliore attrice non protagonista.
Amy Adams è la migliore attrice per Arrival di Villeneuve, mentre Jeff Bridges ha conquistato tutti con il suo sceriffo testardo in Hell or High Water.
Il miglior adattamento va a Martin Scorsese e Jay Cocks per Silence. Il cliente di Farhadi è il miglior film straniero e l’epocale O.J.: Made in America è il miglior doc.
