Gli Independent Spirit Awards sono tradizionalmente consegnati il giorno prima gli Academy Awards, in una cerimonia sulla spiaggia di Malibu.

Si premiano i migliori film indipendenti dell’anno, non distribuiti direttamente da una major ed a basso budget.

In testa con 5 candidature ci sono Silver Linings Playbook di David O.Russell e Moonrise Kingdom di Wes Anderson.

La cinquina dei migliori è completata da Beasts of the Southern Wild, Bernie, Keep the Lights On.

Tra i film stranieri spiccano Amour di Haneke, Un sapore di ruggine ed ossa di Audiard, Sister della Meier e C’era una volta in Anatolia di Bilge Ceylan.
