Nuovo film per lo spagnolo J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, Jurassic World – Il regno distrutto, The Orphanage) che adatterà il romanzo La sociedad de la nieve di Pablo Vierci
Il film sarà ambientato nel 1972 e racconterà la vera storia di ciò che accadde dopo che un volo dell’aeronautica uruguaiana che trasportava una squadra di rugby in Cile si è incastrò su un ghiacciaio delle Ande. Solo 29 dei 45 passeggeri sopravvissero allo schianto, trovandosi in uno dei contesti ambientati più difficili del mondo, costretti a ricorrere a misure estreme per sopravvivere.
Sulla stessa storia nel 2007 era stato girato un documentario da Gonzalo Arijón, che in inglese era stato ri-titolato Stranded, vincendo il Grand Jury Prize al Sundance.
Bayona ha scritto la sceneggiatura con Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego.
Il film sarà girato sulle Ande nella Valle de las Lágrimas, dove precipitò l’aereo, a Montevideo e in Spagna nella Sierra Nevada.

Secondo quanto ha riportato Deadline, Bayona avrebbe riferito: “It was during the documentation process for The Impossible that I discovered Society of the Snow, Pablo Vierci’s fascinating chronicle about the tragedy of the Andes. More than ten years later, my fascination for the novel remains intact and I am happy to face the challenge that lies ahead: To tell one of the most remembered events of the 20th century, with all the complexity that implies a story that gives so much relevance to the survivors as well as to those who never returned from the mountains. I also face it in Spanish, a language that I excitedly return to after 14 years without filming in my own language, and with a team of young Uruguayan and Argentine actors, whom I’m totally thrilled with.”
