Sarà a Venezia nella consueta e prestigiosa sezione del fuori concorso non fiction, il documentario Hopper/Welles.
Nel 1970, mentre Orson Welles tentava di girare The Other Side of the Wind, che avrebbe visto la luce solo nel 2019, Incontrava e intervistava Denis Hopper, che era reduce da Easy Rider e con il suo piccolo film distribuito dalla Columbia, aveva sconvolto Hollywood, mostrando che c’è un modo diverso di fare cinema ed un pubblico che voleva storie e protagonisti diversi.
Era l’inizio della New Hollywood, che per una decina d’anni avrebbe segnato il cinema americano, fino a trasformarsi, ironia della sorte, nel veicolo dei grandi blockbuster estivi, grazie a Lo Squalo e Star Wars.
Il documentario, montato e recuperato da Filip Jan Rymsza, identifica uno dei momenti più decisivi della storia del cinema americano.
“It had been more than a decade since Welles had worked within the Hollywood system, and he had begun to strike out on his own as an independent, ruthlessly idiosyncratic artist; Hopper, on the other hand, had just had an unexpected major success with the studio-financed counterculture hit ‘Easy Rider.’ At this decisive moment, the pair of auteurs shared their candid thoughts and feelings about cinema, politics, and life, and Welles captured this unscripted talk on two cameras, in lush black and white, lit only by a fireplace and hurricane lamps.”
