After surviving the 1862 Battle of Corinth during the Civil War, Newton Knight, a poor farmer from Mississippi, leads a group of small farmers and local slaves in an armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County. Knight subsequently marries former slave, Rachel. He establishes a mixed-race community, unique to the post-war South.
Nel cast anche l’emergente Gugu Mbatha-Raw, che sarà anche in Concussion con Will Smith e Mahershala Ali, visto in House of Cards.
Il film esce il 13 marzo ed è prodotto dalla nuova STX Entertainment, decisa a prendersi uno spazio che le major sembra non volere più: quello dei film adulti a medio budget, come afferma il loro chairman Adam Fogelson, in un’intervista al New Yorker.
