Dopo qualche anno di rinvii e progetti tornati nel cassetto, Spielberg si è rituffato sul set, con uno slancio che arriva dal passato. Terminato Bridge of Spies con Hanks, su sceneggiatura dei Coen, ha cominciato le riprese del nuovo The BFG, tratto da Roald Dahl e scritto da Melissa Mathison (E.T.)che sarà nelle sale la il 1 luglio 2016.
La Warner Bros ha però già annunciato che il 15 dicembre 2017 uscirà un nuovo film di Spielberg, l’adattamento di Ready Player One, firmato da Zack Penn (The Avengers, X Men: The Last Stand) dal libro di Ernest Cline.
